We wrapped up Read Across America Week at our elementary school with Book Character Day! Students had the opportunity to dress up as their favorite book characters and bring a copy of their beloved book to share. To end our community read aloud series, Superintendent Dr. Cave read aloud to a class from each grade level. The read aloud was streamed to all the classrooms so everyone could hear the story of Be You, a reminder to children that being yourself is the best and only way to be!

Our Community Read Aloud Day was a success! Students at our elementary school enjoyed hearing stories from college athletes, district staff, community members and more! A special thanks to Ms. Latosia Gibson from South Carolina State University who closed out the day with a reading of You Are Enough for our first grade classes. After her reading, she graciously gave out bookmarks, fun hats, and a copy of Hannah and Dexter, a book about inclusion written by a local author. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to read to our children and helped us spread the power of literacy!

Registration for 3K, 4K, and Kindergarten begins next Thursday and will remain open throughout the summer. Please remember that registration for 3K–5K students must be completed in person using the packet we provide, as online registration is not available for these grade levels. Our Elementary School celebrated Black History Month with a vibrant and nuanced program that followed slavery, segregation, and freedom. Our students performed skits depicting Rosa Parks and the Alabama Bus Boycott, as well as Harriet Tubman and her journey via the Underground Railroad. Our Dance Troupe performed an inspirational dance and there was a thoughtful monologue by Patricia Johnson. This yearly tradition reminds us of the sacrifices and struggles of our ancestors, the triumphs and victories of our predecessors, and the responsibilities and privileges we have today.
